Elon Musk’s AI chatbot Grok is experiencing rapid user adoption, with app downloads jumping 43% month over month in January, according to data from Similarweb shared on X.
Musk Highlights Strong Performance
Musk wrote on X on Monday, “Grok downloads surge 43% month over month!” responding to a post by X Freeze, a page on X that tracks AI and tech metrics.
Monthly Active Users Jump 30%
According to the Similarweb data shared by X Freeze, Grok’s monthly active users rose from 48 million in December to 62 million in January, representing a 29.1% increase. Store downloads across Android and iPhone increased from 11 million in December to 16 million in January, marking a 43.9% growth.
“Grok is absolutely EXPLODING right now,” X Freeze wrote. “That’s four consecutive months of explosive growth. And Grok 4.20 isn’t even released yet.”
Growth Comes Amid Broader xAI Expansion
The surge follows xAI’s recent merger with SpaceX in early February, creating a combined entity valued at approximately $1.25 trillion. The triangular merger structure keeps xAI as a wholly owned subsidiary while SpaceX prepares for a potential IPO later in 2026.
In January, Grok 4.20 topped the Alpha Arena Season 1.5 live stock trading competition, outperforming models from OpenAI and Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOGL) (NASDAQ:GOOG).
However, xAI also faces regulatory scrutiny, including a criminal investigation in France related to alleged illegal content generation.
